Basic Math Worksheets

Basic math includes skills like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rounding, greater than/less than, fractions, telling time and counting money.

Of course all these skills can be side stepped by learning how to use a calculator or computer, but I strongly recommend that you don't use these devices until all these skills can be performed well without them.

Why would I say that? In helping students who are having a problem with algebra or formulas, I have also noticed they don't know their multiplication table.

Here's an example of what seems to happen.

After studying basic math, Mary knows that 7 x 6 = 42. Now she is starting algebra and sees 7y = 42. So when she's told y equals 6, right away she gets the connection, since she knows well in her head that 7 x 6 = 42.

Now, if asked, Frank isn't too quick to remember what 7 x 6 equals. When he sees the same equation above, and is told y = 6, making the connection isn't so easy for him, and he's not so sure how the teacher came up with that answer. When the formulas and equations get more difficult, it gets even harder for Frank to see the logic behind them, and to remember what to do.

If you want to minimize future math challenges, make sure you practice, practice and practice, until addition, subtraction, multiplication and division come easily without any help.

Free Basic Math Course

The Math Page gives a free and complete course on basic math, covering 32 lessons or topics.

This course is advanced basic math. You might find that this course covers math topics from more than one grade, and may take some time to complete and fully understand.

After covering the explanations and practice problems in the course, you may want to spend more time on the subjects, so create your own worksheets using the free worksheet generators below.

Free Basic Math Worksheets

Super Kids

The SuperKids Math Worksheet Creator lets you make up your own worksheets. You can make worksheets for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, rounding, greater than /less than, and telling time.

The site really lets you practice basic math according to your needs and is probably one of my favourite. For example, if math is really new, you can generate simple questions that total no more than 5, or have every question add 1 to another number. It's your choice. Then as skills get better, you can work with bigger numbers.

There's 2 options for teaching time. One is to generate a worksheet of clocks with hands, and the students writes down the indicated time. The other worksheet suggests a time, and the students draws the hands on the blank clock.

A Plus Math

The A Plus Math website site is a great free resource for having fun with basic math. You can play math games and make flashcards online. But what I really like is being able to generate unlimited math questions. Worksheets can be made to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and counting money (US currency).

RHL School

RHL School is another great site that provides free basic math worksheets. You can practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and rounding. Each time you generate a worksheet, the questions are different.

This website also provides numerous math word problems.

Telling Time

BlackDog's Time

You can have fun practicing to tell time online with BlackDog's Time Clock Game. With this game, you are given the time, and you have to move the clock's hands to match.

Or you might want to print out some worksheets and practice drawing the hands of the clock.

Play to Learn - Clock

The Play to Learn clock game is the opposite of the game above. You are given a clock, and you have to type in the hour and minute.

Learn to Count Money

Play to Learn - Money

With Play to Learn money game you can learn to count money in pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, 50 cent pieces, dollar coins and bills, 5 dollar bills, 10 dollar bills and 20 dollar bills in US funds. You can pick and choose your level of difficulty.

Money Instructor

The Money Instructor website gives you money work sheets to practice counting money. You can also print out money in both Canadian and US funds. No you won't be charged with counterfeiting, but you can have more fun playing grocery store, restaurant, and toy store, while you buy, sell and make change.

With an email address, you can sign up for free for limited worksheets, printing money and games. I found signing up for the free membership to be easy and painless.

Of course, there's a full paid membership if you like, since you don't have access to everything. Full membership was $24.95 when I checked last; however, you should check with the website to see if that's still the annual member rate.

Fun Brain

Here's an interesting online game from Fun Brain called Change Maker that you can play in the currency of Australia, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom or the United States.

You're given the amount of the sale, and told how much the customer has given you. You have to choose the correct coins as change and type in the box how many of each coin you should give back. Unlike some websites, the coin graphics are very good.

The object, of course, is to get the transaction right, because, unlike most real life situations, the money goes in your piggy bank. The game gives great practice subtracting, and also coin recognition and business life.

Rich Kid Smart Kid

Learning about money is much more than learning to count it. Keeping track of it, and making it work for you are skills every adult needs. Judging from the number of bankruptcies, average credit card debt, and overtime hours away from family, it seems few adults have learned these skills.

The Rich Kid Smart Kid, by Robert Kiyosaki, is an excellent book to help parents teach their children to have money work for them, instead of being enslaved to it. I'm not so sure this info is just for kids. I didn't have any teachers in school teach me this. Maybe you didn't either. I found it to be an enthralling read.

His website has 4 interactive games designed so kids can learn about making money, understand the trap of debt, and grasp how to get money working for them, instead of always working for money. You can also purchase the Cashflow 101 game.
