Learn Arabic
Arabic is ranked the 5th most influential language in the world.
Once you learn Arabic, you'll have 221 million more people to speak with, and 24 countries to travel in, including (in part): Algeria, Arabian Peninsula, Chad, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, and Tunisia.
There seems to be a shortage of Arabic translators, so speaking Arabic may provide an opportunity for work as well.
Don't forget, you read Arabic right to left, as you do with Hebrew - not left to right like English.
As difficult as Arabic may seem, remember there is an alphabet, making it easier to learn than Chinese (which has no alphabet.) The alphabet has 28 letters.
Of course, there are sounds made in Arabic that we don't use in English. But that's true of every other language including French and Spanish. We all say letters a little differently from one another, and we have to learn to hear what sound is really being made and learn to copy it.
Free Online Resources to Learn Arabic
My favourite free resource is
Before You Know It Lite - Learn Arabic.
It's actually a free language learning program that teaches you vocabulary for 13 different topics or lists. And each list is given to you twice - once with Arabic letters and once transliterated into English letters, so words look like you would say them in English.
I'm really glad I found this one, since it has helped our pronunciation a great deal, and our memory of new vocabulary words. The audio and graphics are very clear, and the program is very easy to use.
The program does not time out, it's yours forever. You could copy it to a disk, and load it on a computer that is not online. Just choose "Arabic", or one of the languages you want, and the link will be sent to you by email.
I have to admit, I asked for all the languages, since I am language greedy. In fact, if you're not sure which language you want to learn, this is a great free way to test the water, and pick your favourite language, or let your children tell you which language is their favourite. It's also great if you want to learn basic conversation from more than one language.
LanguageGuide.org can help you learn a wide range of
Arabic vocabulary words
and includes pictures and audio, so it's great for children and adults. It also includes the
Arabic alphabet
and
Arabic grammar.
Learn to Read Arabic
provides six basic lessons to learn the Arabic alphabet. The graphics are large and clear, which helps in learning this difficult language.
Speak 7

Some of the topics covered include: adjectives, alphabet, articles, comparison, feminine and plural, numbers, phrases, prepositions, pronouns, questions and negation, verbs and vowels. The vocabulary lists include:, adjectives, animals, body, food and house, occupations and school, places and sport, time and weather and verbs.
The
free online Arabic course, MsaCourse01,
provides a great deal of comprehensive Arabic grammar, and includes some audio as well. It also includes worksheets and reading practice.
One great benefit for you may be the
mouth map,
that shows which part of the mouth to use in making Arabic sounds.
The free Arabic online course from Babel
is another informative site for learning Arabic, especially since it has some good quality audio to practice with. Despite the fact it has distracting borders, the valuable information it contains made me want to include it.
