Learn Georgian

Georgian is the official language of the country of Georgia, one of the former Soviet Republics located in the Caucasus - No we are not talking about the southern state of Georgia in the United States of America.

Although many in the country can speak the Russian language, the Georgian language is used in all areas of society, and a working knowledge of the language is essential for effective communication in the country.

There are also people who speak Georgian in parts of Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Russia. The total number of people who speak Georgian is estimated at around 4.1 million.

You will notice that the alphabet of Russian and Georgian look nothing alike. Georgian is written from left to right, just like English. The Mkhedruli alphabet has 33 letters. It does not have capital and lowercase letters.

Free Resources to Learn Georgian

My favourite free resource is Before You Know It Lite - Learn Georgian. It's actually a free language learning program that teaches you vocabulary for 13 or more different topics or lists. I'm really glad I found this one, since it has helped our pronunciation a great deal, and our memory of new vocabulary words. The audio and graphics are very clear, and the program is very easy to use.

The program does not time out, it's yours forever. You could copy it to a disk, and load it on a computer that is not online. Just choose "Georgian", or one of the languages you want, and the link will be sent to you by email, or you'll be redirected to a page where you can download the program.

I have to admit, I asked for all the languages, since I am language greedy. In fact, if you're not sure which language you want to learn, this is a great free way to test the water, and pick your favourite language, or let your children tell you which language is their favourite. It's also great if you want to learn basic conversation from more than one language.
