Ontario Field Trip Ideas to Learn About Birds
Your own backyard, neighbourhood, local parks and nature trails are a place to start your bird search.
Start keeping a list of all the birds you've spotted.
But wait you say. You don't know the names of that many birds, and you're not sure what that little brown bird is.
No problem, the Royal Ontario Museum really helps us new birders out. You can generate a field guide for your region of Ontario, and see what birds you're most likely to see (helps narrow it down). Just choose your region, and create an online guide to study. It gives great pictures, some identifying information, and - what I love best - a sample of what the specific bird's song sounds like.

After you've practiced your bird listening skills, why not try the
Royal Ontario Museum song bird test.
Aviary
Here's another idea, why not go to an aviary like the
Niagara Falls Aviary - Birds of the Lost Kingdom
Explore the tropical splendor of the rainforest as you interact with over 300 free flying birds from around the world. They have an educational program as well.
Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Brereton Field Naturalists
Brereton Field Naturalists
are a group of very knowledgeable local people. Not only do they know birds, they know a lot of valuable information about wildflowers and nature. We enjoyed going bird banding with some of them in the spring. Some activities are free, and others are for paid members, but membership is not expensive. The postings on the
Simcoe Nature Board
and
Carden Alver Nature Board
are very helpful to know what birds are in the area, possibly photos, and where to find specific birds you'd like to see.
Brooklands Farm - Bracebridge
Brooklands Farm
in Bracebridge not only takes farming with natural methods seriously, but is also involved with conservation and birding. Check out their website for a list of birds they have there.
