South Africa - Animals
South Africa is famous for the
Kruger National Park.
It is one of the oldest and largest game reserves in Africa. What kinds of animals might you see? You should see: elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, warthog, lion, spotted hyaena, baboon, hippo, impala, kudu, vervet monkey, waterbuck, tsessebe, wildbeest, bushbaby, mongoose, duiker, steenbok, klipspringer, genet, and bats.
From the world of birds, you should see: vultures, owls, bee-eaters, rollers, eagles, bustards, hornbills, starlings, and shrikes.
You may also see: leopard, wild dog, cheetah, roan antelope, sable antelope, bat-eared fox, rhino, honey badger, porcupine, rhebok, aardvark, aardwolf, civet, caracal, serval, and suni.
African Vacation at Home
The freedom of course with home schooling, is you can learn about African animals with books and videos, or you could actually go to Africa and see the animals first hand. But if you're waiting for the budget to do that here's the next best - very exciting - thing.
The
Nkorho Pan webcam
has been set up next to the Kruger National Park. It's a live feed, both day and night, of an African watering hole. At night, infra-red makes it possible to see what's visiting the watering hole. You can also hear sounds, so if there's a lion or a bug making a noise, you'll hear it.
Although we can't perfectly predict which animal will be drinking and when, wouldn't it be a great animal behaviour project to record what you see as a family. If you keep it turned on in the background with sound, maybe you'll hear something to make you look at the screen. Just a thought! Happy watching.
In fact, as I started typing this note, no animals were visting the watering hole, but in the background I just heard some action. I checked it out, and now there's a hippo taking a dip! What will you see?
