Field Trip Ideas in West Virginia to Learn About Caves and Caverns
Organ Cave
Organ Cave
is the second largest commercial cave in the eastern United States, and one of the oldest commercial caves in the country. A Natural National Landmark with over 45 miles of mapped passageways. It is the 21st largest cave in the world and there are still 200 known passageways that have yet to be explored.
Colonial pioneers discovered the cave in 1704 and ever since, it has played a significant role in American history, as well as providing a living laboratory for scientists in the fields of geology, archeology, biology and paleontology.
Walking tours of the cave are offered year round led by a knowledgeable guide. Organ Cave is more than a collection of stalactites and stalagmites; it's a living museum. Tours teach about the American Civil War, give an understanding of cave ecology, and provide an in-depth introduction into how caves work and efforts to preserve these natural wonders.
For the more adventurous, Extended Exploring Expeditions are offered, going further into the depths of the cave and discovering some of the most amazing sights on the planet. A heavy investment in gear is not necessary to experience some of the best caving in the world, as gear and experienced guides are included in package deals.
