Field Trip Ideas to Learn About Butterflies

As always, your local neighbourhood and parks are a good place to watch for butterflies and moths.

Don't forget to look for catepillars, since they may soon be a butterfly or moth. I say this because I know a lady who found catepillars eating her bush. She picked each one off carefully, and drown them in a bucket of water. While this saved her garden of chemicals to get rid of pests, she was distressed to learn they had just killed the catepillars of the uncommon swallowtail butterfly. So think about all the phases of the butterfly's life, when you begin your search for these beautiful flyers.

Here's some sites to help you identify the butterfly you spotted:

Butterflies of North America - this site includes pictures of both the butterfly and what it looks like as a caterpillar. As well, if you live in the United States or Mexico, it includes a checklist of the butterflies known to be in your area.

Virtual Museum of Butterflies and Moths - Provides pictures of butterflies and moths inr Peru, and Canada, including the provinces: of Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. The site also includes information you can use in learning more about the life cycles and habitats of butterflies.
